“I've never seen anything like this before"
"I’ve always wanted an aquarium but they’re too much work. This sounds much better”
“Mesmerizing"
"Allergy free, bug free, mold free greenery"
“I like how you can’t overwater them!”
Have trouble keeping plants alive? Away from home for long periods of time? Don't worry. We got you. Of 23 strains of seaweed we found along the NZ coastline, this was #1 for tolerance. These things aren't going to keel over if you forget to water them.
Let's be honest, no ones likes scrubbing tanks. With SeaLamps, you don't have to. The cylindrical design and constant airflow mean these SeaLamps are self-cleaning, saving you valuable time. All they need is a quick water change once a month, using tap water and our special formulated sachets.
The strain of seaweed we use is naturalized to NZ, and is farmed in partnership with the University of Waikato.

No - The fish will get very dizzy!! Fish are best left in the ocean. Our Sea Lamps are designed specifically for seaweed, and they keep our green seaweed very happy.
Yes! It is absolutely real seaweed. We surveyed the NZ coastline for 23 strains of seaweed, and this strain was #1 for hardiness. It can handle a wide range of temperatures and light levels.
It's up to you. We think this seaweed is better as decoration than as food, but similar species are eaten in some cultures. As we grow, we hope to develop other strains of seaweed specifically suited for home consumption. Follow us to be the first to find out. www.instagram.com/Sea_Lamps_NZ
Sea Lamps are possibly the world's easiest aquariums to care for. The cylindrical design and constant airflow keeps the sides of the tank clean, and the seaweed creates almost zero solid waste. All that is required is a water change once every 3-4 weeks (depending on where you put it in the house) using tap water and our specially formulated maintenance sachets. This takes about 2 minutes. All SeaLamps come with full guidance and instructions
Unlike houseplants, SeaLamps won't die of dehydration. As long as your SeaLamp is well positioned (away from direct light, lower light is better for low maintenance), they can last a month or longer without requiring attention. The water may start to get dirty after this, it's not ideal for the seaweed, but it's unlikely to kill it.
The seaweed can live for many years. This seaweed can handle high light and low light. Low light means it will last longer and be lower maintenance, high light means it will grow faster but be higher maintenance.
It could take several years for this to happen, but you have a few options: 1) get a larger tank
2) harvest the seaweed for your garden or compost. From there you can purchase new starter seaweed from us. Over time, we hope to build a range of seaweeds colors and varietals people can choose from.
The seaweed likes being tumbled, but if you'd like to turn the pump off, you can, and the seaweed can survive several days
Yes! You can choose if they grow fast or slow. Lower light will mean slower growth and less maintenance, higher light will be higher growth and more maintenance.
The seaweed starts about 5-10mm in diameter
The SeaLamps consume a very small amount of power, about 3 watts. Which is 3x less than a regular LED bulb, and 30 x less than an incandescent bulb.
Peter is a Marine Biologist and ‘Ocean Gardener’ at the University of Waikato, where he helped to develop the aquaculture of this particular strain of seaweed. This seaweed grows well in home & office environments and looks stunning.
Air is pumped in from the bottom - tumbling the symmetrical ‘clusters’ around the cylinder & creating a uniquely dynamic green space. The venture is early stage and we are looking for early adopters to grow with. As we grow, we'd like to domesticate new varietals of NZ seaweeds for the home, including edible seaweeds.
